Why are male dentists not asking for help?

Every call over the past year to the BDA Benevolent Fund, which supports the financial and emotional needs of dental students, dentists and their dependants, has come from a woman.

In a post on its website, the charity asks: “Are men overlooking valuable help and advice that could make life a little easier?”

In the last 12 months, 58% of helpline calls were about divorce, separation, childcare and benefits. “While women may feel more comfortable reaching out in these areas, men still face the same issues,” said the post.

The charity said 95% of all calls relate to legal or financial matters, including:

  • Divorce and family law
  • Data protection issues
  • Landlord and tenant concerns
  • Consumer rights
  • Education advice

“Surprisingly, just 5% of calls focused on mental health. That leaves us wondering – are people avoiding these conversations because they’re uncomfortable, or simply unaware that support is available?”

Most callers are between 40 and 49 years old, and nearly three-quarters get in touch during the morning.

Men are, however, using the Wisdom Health and Wellbeing Portal, even if they are not calling the helpline.

Women account for the majority of users (63%), but men make up 29%, with another 8% preferring not to disclose their gender.

“The appeal? For many men, it seems to come down to privacy, anonymity, and the ability to explore resources at their own pace.” The numbers show male users particularly value:

  • Mental wellbeing content (the most popular feed choice for men)
  • Mini health checks
  • Progress trackers.

“So while men may not be talking as much, they are looking after themselves – just in quieter ways.”

But the charity’s post ends: “If you’re a man reading this, remember: you don’t need to ‘tough it out’ alone. Reaching out – in whatever way works for you – isn’t a weakness. It’s a strength.”
