The University of Dundee Dental School has celebrated a landmark international success: its first international Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course in restorative dentistry, welcoming 24 dentists from China.

Developed in conjunction with a one-day CPD course at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, the week-long programme combined lectures, live demonstrations, interactive discussion and hands-on workshops.

The course, featuring sessions delivered by George Cherukara, Iad Gharib, Richard Boyle and Kevin Davey, showcased Dundee’s research-informed teaching and evidence-based approach.

Sessions included The Pink & White in Aesthetic Dentistry, Minimal Intervention in Contemporary Restorative Dentistry Practice, Digital Dentistry, Endodontics and Niall McGuinness, from Edinburgh Dental Institution, delivered a session on the Orthodontic- Restorative interface. Delegates also explored dental haptics simulation, led by Clem Seeballuck and Cathy Shields after reflecting on their own cases in a Bring Your Own Case Discussion.

Feedback was excellent, said a spokesperson. Participants rated satisfaction highly across course content, tutors, venue, facilities, organisation and personal learning objectives. They particularly praised the Dundee Dental Team’s candid attitude, hard work, hospitality and commitment to research-informed, evidence-based practice.

The group was left in no doubt that they were learning within one of the UK’s leading dental schools, moved by Dundee’s rich history and its top-ranked reputation – a legacy of excellence that continues to shape dental education, research and patient care worldwide.

Delegates highlighted the relevance of the topics, the quality of the tutors, the practical sessions, the materials and the welcoming venue and catering. The Bring Your Own Case Discussion was especially valued for connecting theory to participants’ own clinical challenges, while the digital dentistry demonstration and tooth wear workshop provided immediately applicable skills.

Allen Chen, Director of the TOP-Dental Education (TOPDE) Agency, said: “From the first lecture to the final hands-on session, we were immersed in Dundee’s outstanding curriculum. The programme brought together aesthetic dentistry, minimal intervention, occlusion, digital dentistry and missing tooth management in a way that directly enriched our clinical practice.

“Dundee is the UK’s top-ranked dental school and a world-leading centre for clinical trials. To learn here, with such interactive teaching and advanced techniques, has been a truly transformative experience. We are privileged to have been part of it.”

Professor Peter Mossey, Head of Dundee Dental School, said: “We are delighted to provide this meaningful CPD programme for our Chinese colleagues. It is a powerful example of internationalisation, using CPD to generate revenue and global profile for Dundee.

“The course will now run on a rolling five-year basis, and our upcoming CSU dental student internship programme, welcoming 15 students, will also run over five years. Built on years of trust with our Chinese partners, this success brings international experience to our visitors, our students and our wider society.”

The initiative, masterminded and jointly organised by Mohammad Islam and Siyang Yuan, enhances Dundee’s reputation as a globally connected, research-led Dental School, delivering sustainable international impact as well as providing a hospitable cultural experience with trips to local amenities and beauty spots, Scottish food and entertainment and boosting the local economy.
