BSPD issues new oral health guide to support parents and carers of children and young people with diabetes
Provides up‑to‑date support for those navigating the additional oral health considerations linked to diabetes.
The British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) has launched a new leaflet offering clear, practical oral health advice for parents and carers of children and young people (CYP) living with diabetes. Developed with input from paediatric dental specialists, diabetes clinicians and families, the guide provides up‑to‑date support for those navigating the additional oral health considerations linked to diabetes.
Covering topics such as “How does diabetes affect my child’s oral health?”, “What should I look out for?” and “How can we prevent problems?”, the leaflet offers confidence‑building guidance alongside practical tips, preventive advice and links to further trusted resources. It aims to empower families to feel informed, prepared and supported in helping their child maintain healthy teeth and gums for life.
The leaflet is available to download from BSPD’s website (see Notes to Editors). The Society hopes it will reach every parent, carer and professional for whom understanding the oral health needs of a child with diabetes is an important part of their personal or professional role.
For many families, managing diabetes can feel overwhelming. Oral health may not always be front of mind, yet children with diabetes can be at increased risk of certain dental problems. BSPD’s new guidance explains these risks clearly and sensitively, while emphasising the simple, achievable steps that can make a meaningful difference.
Dr Oosh Devalia OBE, BSPD President, said: “BSPD is committed to ensuring that every child, whatever their health condition, has the opportunity to enjoy a healthy smile for life. We hope this new leaflet will provide reassurance, clarity and practical support to families of children and young people with diabetes, helping them feel confident in protecting their child’s oral health.”
