As stress-related burnout continues to challenge workplaces across the UK, Sam Wones, co-founder of the Adaptable Human Project (AHP), is urging organisations to adopt a more strategic, science-led approach to employee wellbeing.

Launching his message ahead of International Stress Awareness Week (3–7 November), Sam draws on years of experience as a Royal Marine and elite coach, and his performance psychology background, to advocate for practical solutions through AHP’s signature TREAT Protocol.

Sam’s journey spans the demands of elite sport to the high tempo of military service, offering him a first-hand understanding of how chronic stress can undermine both individuals and teams.

“In the Royal Marines, I saw how unmanaged stress could push even the toughest people to their limit,” said Sam. “But I also learned that resilience isn’t a talent, it’s a skill that can be built, with the right support and evidence-based tools.”

At the core of AHP’s philosophy is the TREAT Protocol; a framework Sam helped develop to translate the latest research into real-world change:

  • Theory and research: Sam grounds every strategy in credible science, drawing parallels between performance psychology, military training, and what the latest studies show about stress and mental health at work.
  • Education: By demystifying how stress works, Sam empowers people from all levels—including first-time managers and senior leaders – to recognise pressure points and seek early support.
  • Application: Practicality is paramount: Sam equips organisations with hands-on routines, simple breathwork, and mindset shifts proven to help teams manage digital overload, improve sleep, and recover from challenging periods.
  • Take-aways: Each interaction is designed to leave people with actionable, everyday techniques—so support extends well beyond the training room.

“Too often, stress management is spoken about in abstract terms,” said Sam.

“What truly makes a difference is understanding what’s happening beneath the surface—and having practical steps everyone can use to adapt in demanding times.”

To ensure a holistic approach, AHP integrates expertise from Lucie Tullett-Wones, somatic clinician and co-founder, adding fresh insight into the physical side of stress. Together, their shared mission is to help UK workplaces move from ‘just coping’ to achieving genuine, sustainable wellbeing.
