British Orthodontic Society launches ‘My Missing Teeth’
Resource is the result of collaboration across the dental specialties.
The British Orthodontic Society has launched a new resource – mymissingteeth.co.uk – for patients and healthcare professionals. The patient-centred hypodontia resource is the result of a collaboration with experts across the dental specialties.
Hypodontia is the dental term for when a tooth or teeth do not develop and are permanently missing. It is a condition that can affect around 1 in 30 of the UK population and can have a significant impact on those affected.
People with hypodontia and their families were looking for expert information alongside real life experiences to help them navigate their options and feel less alone. The resource is divided into sections for patients, parents, under 10s and professionals. Each section includes animations and experiences of treatment.
Patients having treatment say it can transform the way they feel about themselves. When Tori discovered she was missing several adult teeth, it was a shock that affected her confidence as a teenager. Smiling felt difficult, and she often worried about how her teeth looked.
Following treatment, Tori feels more confident than ever and is now a Saracens Rugby Player. At BOC 2025, Tori shared her experiences and the positive impact of ‘My Missing Teeth’.
Sofia Ahmad, Project Lead, said: “Patients were at the very heart of the development of ‘My Missing Teeth’. They were involved throughout the development phase and have already shared overwhelmingly positive feedback on the resource.
“We hope the website becomes the primary destination in the UK for those wanting to know more about hypodontia. This resource would not have been possible without the collaboration of key experts across the dental specialties alongside generous support from the British Orthodontic Society.”
Hayley Llandro, Consultant Orthodontist and Director of External Relations, said: “The BOS is proud to have supported this excellent resource which covers every aspect of the hypodontia journey. It’s wonderful to see the positive feedback from patient and healthcare professionals. We look forward to sharing it widely.”
