Calcivis, the Edinburgh-based dental diagnostic company, has been placed into administration.

Its imaging system promised to revolutionise caries management through early detection, allowing for a more preventative treatment model.

The system applied a patented photoprotein which, in the presence of free calcium ions released from an actively decaying tooth surface, produced a very short, low-level flash of light. An integrated intra-oral sensor within the imaging device detected the luminescence and presented clinicians with a chairside demineralisation map.

The ability to visualise active demineralisation on patients’ teeth provided insight into whether a caries lesion was likely to progress and, therefore, required treatment.

However, joint administrators AAB Business & Tax Advisory said that “despite the progress made by the business and the quality of its underlying technology, the company was unable to bridge to profitability sufficiently quickly and continued to experience pressure on cashflow.

“Prior to the appointment, the directors undertook an accelerated marketing process to seek a sale of the business and assets. While there was interest in the company and its technology, no deliverable solvent sale or funding solution was capable of being completed within the available timeframe.

“Mindful of their duties and responsibilities to creditors, the directors therefore took the difficult decision to cease to trade and seek the appointment of administrators.”

The spokesperson added: “The joint administrators are now assessing the company’s position and will seek to realise the remaining assets for the benefit of creditors.

“Calcivis developed a high-quality product with clear clinical application and significant work had gone into bringing that technology to market. Unfortunately, despite those achievements, the company was not able to reach profitability or secure a sale or funding solution within the required timeframe.

“The directors took advice and acted cognisant of their responsibilities to creditors. Our immediate priority is to support the remaining employees through the claims process and to realise the company’s remaining assets in the best interests of creditors.”
