Dental Protection has urged dental care professionals (DCPs) to check their CPD hours and ensure they have appropriate indemnity for their scope of work before the registration renewal deadline.

The General Dental Council (GDC) renewal period is open, and DCPs have until 31 July to confirm that they meet all the requirements for renewal on MyGDC, the online portal that replaced eGDC in March 2026.

Dr Yvonne Shaw, Underwriting Policy Lead at Dental Protection, said: “Every year, Dental Protection speaks to members whose registration and ability to work has been impacted by missing the renewal requirements.

“One of the main issues we have seen is registration being removed for failing to record sufficient CPD and particularly meet the requirement to have undertaken at least 10 hours of CPD within the previous two years. We are pleased to see the GDC now providing updated guidance to address some of the common questions that arise about meeting CPD requirements.

“As we approach the end of the renewal window, there is still time to address any shortfall in CPD hours. Dental Protection’s Learning Hub hosts a wide range of resources and now includes a new five-part CPD series designed specifically for dental hygienists and dental therapists. All courses available on The Learning Hub can be accessed at no extra cost for Dental Protection members and can be used to count towards the CPD requirement.

“In addition, as we develop new skills and take on different roles, it is important to ensure that indemnity arrangements remain appropriate for our work and reflect the full scope of practice and work we do. For example, if you have started providing care through direct access, you should check your indemnity includes this work.

“Confirming adequate indemnity arrangements is now an important step of the renewal process. As a final check, remember to ensure that the payment has gone through before the deadline of 31 July.”
