The Scottish Government is seeking nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Interim Deputy Chief Dental Officer, with a focus on oral health improvement and reducing inequalities.

In a letter to NHS Board Chief Executives, Tom Ferris, Scotland’s CDO, said that applications require Board Director of Dentistry or Board Management sponsorship “as the arrangement is to be provided under a Service Level Agreement.”

The CDO’s letter says that those eligible for the role will be fully registered Board-employed dentists “with extensive expertise and experience of oral health improvement and reducing inequalities.”

Responsible to Scotland’s CDO, he said the new Deputy CDO will work closely with the existing Deputy CDO who already covers General Dental Practice.

The CDO’s letter follows the announcement last week that Dr Gillian Leslie has been appointed CDO for Scotland. She will take up the post on 1 January, following the retirement of Dr Ferris at the end of December.

The role will require a commitment of two-to-four days per week, to initially cover a three month period from January to March.

“This is an exciting opportunity at a complex time,” said the CDO. “The successful individual will have the opportunity to make a substantial contribution to how we reduce oral health inequalities and deliver NHS dental care for the future.”

Further information on the position is contained in the CDO’s letter, including how to submit an expression of interest. The closing date for receipt of expressions of interest is Wednesday 10 December at 12 noon.
