Scottish consultant addresses Indian conference
Albert Yeung, consultant in dental public health at NHS Lanarkshire was invited to deliver a lecture at a prestigious international conference in India, and took the opportunity to showcase the Scottish Childsmile and Smile4life programmes.
He said: “I was honoured to be asked to deliver a lecture at the FDI annual world dental congress in New Delhi.
“In my presentation, I focused on the Childsmile programme, which is designed to improve the oral health of children in Scotland and reduce inequalities in dental health and improve access to dental services.
“This is an area that NHS Lanarkshire excels in and I am proud that the health board is the best performing mainland board in providing dental fluoride varnish applications to children within this programme.
“I also highlighted the Smile4life homeless programme, which was inspired by the success of Childsmile.
“Smile4life enables health and social care professionals to provide evidence-based tailored oral health messages to meet the needs of homeless people in Scotland.”
NHS Lanarkshire delivered at least two fluoride varnish applications to 66.7 per cent of children aged three and four, as compared to a national average of 19.5 per cent. These applications have proved to be an extra protection against tooth decay when used in addition to toothbrushing.
